We were told that if our daughter didn't go year-round and travel to the big complexes, she'd fall behind. She specialized in volleyball at 11. By 14 she'd had two overuse injuries and was so burned out she quit a sport she used to love. The pressure to keep paying and keep traveling came from the club the whole way.

The app we used to organize our rec league was free for years. After it got bought, basic things like rosters, scheduling, and payments are all behind a paid tier now, and every family gets upsold constantly. What bothers me most is how much data they collect on the kids — performance, location, what parents spend — and nobody can tell me where it goes.

Our gym is basically required to compete at Varsity-owned events to have any shot at a Worlds bid. The uniforms are bedazzled and cost $400 each, and you can't buy them from anyone else. Add camp fees, music licensing, choreography, gate fees for grandparents to watch, and a streaming subscription, and All-Star cheer runs us close to $7,000 a season. When our gym looked at an independent competition, they were warned…

The team app exposed our family info. My son's full profile — including our home address [REDACTED] and my phone [REDACTED] — was visible to other parents in the league directory for a week. Support closed the ticket without explaining how it happened.
